Let’s begin with defining our terms. What is the difference between investment and price? A price tag is the cost of a goods or services paid in exchange for said goods or services. An investment, is putting energy, time, or resources into a future experience, financial gain, or emotional payoff.
What is the most expensive item you own? For most it’s probably their car or home. These are necessities, and yet you don’t see everyone driving the same car or living in the least expensive home. Why? Because there is a vast market of options from the most luxurious and beautiful cars and homes to simple, utilitarian, small vehicles and apartments. The same is true with photography.
Taking pictures is longer complicated, expensive, or even something that requires much thought, thanks to the invention of the smartphone. Most of us carry the ability to capture any moment at any time in our pockets or purses. What does this mean? Well, it means two things:
There is often very little skill, technique, or playfulness involved with most of the moments you are capturing.
Most moments will never make it to print.
Many people have recognized this problem and begun to hire “photographers”. Why the quotes? Well, the reality is, it doesn’t take a whole lot to start up a shoot and burn photography business with a cheap digital camera, and most people can’t tell the difference at first glance between a seasoned artist, who captures natural, beautiful, well curated portraits, and someone who shoots on manual and occasionally gets a good shot of their subject.
The choice is up to you. Are you a person who pays for a service or a person who prefers to invest. I am a person who invests. As my husband always says, “Buy cheap, buy twice.” If I were to translate that to the world of Photography, I would say “Physical Quality beats Digital Quantity every day of the week.”
I am learning to no longer identify first as a photographer, but as an artist. Which is why I ask for a commission fee vs. a session fee. I am a Custom Fine Art Portrait Artist, who has been using photography as my medium of creating curated art pieces for clients for over 15 years. And in case you were wondering, no, you don’t have to be rich to afford Fine Printed Portraits.
I am a supporter of the arts, as an artist, and always will be, I don’t believe that investing in Fine Art is just for the rich, in fact, many of my clients are teachers, nurses, administrative assistants, fellow artists, or small business owners.
The clients that I serve are unique in one way across the board. They understand that there is nothing they could ever invest in that has more return on investment than capturing the moments of their life, their family, and their season in Custom Fine Art Portraiture.
Is that you? If so, I’d love to chat, and as a reminder, because I know that for many conclusions can be reached before information is shared… there is no minimum purchase requirement to work with me, and I do my best to work within any budget.
